Between 1600 and the mid-1800s, a martial art called Hojojutsu appeared. This was used by samurai to arrest and restrict prisoners with rope, in a more personal and elaborate form. The prisoners were later publicly humiliated, tied by the ropes that transmitted the type of crime, through different techniques and ties.

After the end of Hojojutsu, Japanese people started using this same technique, but for BDSM. Here, this art came to be used in a sexual manner, which was named Shibari.
